While many appreciate the comfort of air conditioning, few ask: who actually invented it? The answer is Willis Haviland Carrier, universally recognized as the "Father of Air Conditioning."

One might wonder: simple cooling devices existed as early as 1842-why is Carrier alone hailed as the Father of Air Conditioning?

The key distinction lies in the fact that while predecessors only achieved "temperature reduction," Carrier was the first to realize the precise, integrated control of temperature, humidity, and air purity, thereby establishing a complete, commercially viable modern air conditioning system.

The Birth of Air Conditioning: Solving a Color-Registration Problem at a Print Shop
In 1902, the 25-year-old Carrier was an engineer earning a weekly wage of $10 when a New York color printing plant sought his help. The hot, humid summer air caused the paper to expand and contract repeatedly, leading to constant misalignments in color registration and heavy financial losses for the factory. Humidity control was a technical "blind spot" that no one had yet mastered. Carrier's initial experiments yielded little success until, on a foggy day at a train station, he observed steam from a locomotive condensing into white mist upon contact with the cold air. This sparked an immediate breakthrough: if air passed over low-temperature coils, the water vapor would condense and separate out, leaving the air dry and cool.


Following this inspiration, he built an air-handling system equipped with cooling coils and automatic controls. It stabilized the workshop's humidity at 55%, completely resolving the printing issue. The system was successfully patented in 1906, marking the birth of modern air conditioning.


From Farm Boy to Technical Genius: The Foundation of Carrier's Success
Carrier's ability to create this epoch-making invention stemmed from the mindset and skills he cultivated throughout his life.

Born into an American farming family in 1876, he gained a mechanical foundation from his mother, who was skilled at repairing various types of machinery. At the age of nine, his mother used apples to help him solve math problems, fostering a habit of breaking down complex issues into manageable parts and focusing on practical, real-world solutions. He later enrolled at Cornell University to study mechanical engineering. While working part-time selling products during his studies, he gained early insight into actual market demands. After graduating, he dedicated himself to the R&D of HVAC equipment, combining the rigor of an engineer with the long-term vision of a businessman.

In 1911, he published a groundbreaking psychrometric chart. By systematically mapping the relationships between temperature, humidity, and heat, he effectively established air conditioning as a distinct engineering discipline; this chart remains a standard fixture in HVAC textbooks to this day.

For its first 20 years, air conditioning served machines, not people.
In the two decades following its invention, air conditioning was used exclusively for industrial production rather than for the general public. Early equipment was primarily employed in textile mills to control dust and static electricity, in pharmaceutical plants to preserve drug potency, in tool factories to prevent blade rust, and in hospitals to reduce infection rates among patients.

In 1915, Carrier and his partners raised the capital to found the Carrier Engineering Corporation. Military contracts during World War I and business in drying equipment helped the company weather operational challenges, while its operations simultaneously expanded globally into regions including Europe, Southeast Asia, China, and the Middle East.

The successful development of the centrifugal chiller in 1922-with its massive cooling capacity-enabled consistent temperatures throughout entire shopping malls, movie theaters, and skyscrapers. After a U.S. department store installed central air conditioning in 1924, the resulting comfortable environment noticeably boosted consumer spending. In 1925, a complete Carrier system was installed at the Rivoli Theatre in New York; crowds flocked there specifically to enjoy the cool air while watching movies, marking the moment air conditioning truly entered the public consciousness.

Small-scale residential air conditioners entered mass production in 1931, and the brand launched a dealership network in 1933, gradually transforming air conditioning from an industrial tool into an affordable consumer product for ordinary households. During the Great Depression and World War II, Carrier continued to focus on the marine, railway, and defense sectors; his air conditioning technology became essential for naval vessels, fighter jet wind tunnels, and penicillin research laboratories alike.

In 1950, at the age of 74, Carrier passed away due to heart disease, yet the technology he developed had fundamentally reshaped modern human civilization. From the perspective of urban development, the rise of dense skyscraper districts and tropical international metropolises like Singapore and Dubai would have been impossible without air conditioning. Industrially, precision sectors such as chip manufacturing, aerospace testing, and biomedicine rely on environments with constant temperature and humidity to ensure production quality. In daily life, air conditioning in hospitals can cut infection rates by half, and estimates indicate that global productivity would plummet without it.

The company founded by Willis Carrier has a history spanning over a century; it spun off from its parent company, United Technologies Corporation, to become an independent, publicly traded entity in 2020. Through the acquisitions of companies such as Giwee, Toshiba Carrier, and Viessmann, it has bolstered its capabilities in climate solutions, including heat pumps and VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) systems; its total revenue for 2024 reached $22.486 billion. Willis Carrier was named one of *Time* magazine's "100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century," and air conditioning was ranked by the National Academy of Engineering as one of the top ten greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century.
