Correct use, repair and maintenance of precision measuring tools

In industrial production, in order to ensure the dimensional accuracy of equipment parts and processed workpieces, the use of precision measuring tools such as vernier calipers and micrometers is indispensable in various types of production and processing processes. And precisely because of its precision, when using it, it is necessary to follow standardized and reasonable operating procedures. In addition, the repair and maintenance of precision measuring tools also have high requirements. If the measures are improper, it is possible to destroy the accuracy and reliability of the measuring tools. Users must master the correct methods.

01
The correct use requirements of precision measuring tools are not that all equipment can be measured with precision measuring tools. For example, forgings and castings, or parts with abrasives such as diamond, such surfaces, precision measuring tools must never be used to measure, which can easily cause wear on the measuring surface of the measuring tool and affect its accuracy.

Before measuring, check whether the measuring surface of the precision measuring tool and the measured surface of the part are clean. If there is foreign matter, it will affect the accuracy of the measurement, so be sure to wipe the foreign matter clean before measuring.
Due to the effect of thermal expansion and contraction, temperature is an important factor affecting the measurement results. When measuring, in order to ensure accuracy, the temperature of the parts and the measuring tool must be kept consistent. It is best to measure at normal room temperature, around 20 degrees Celsius. When storing precision measuring tools, do not expose them to direct sunlight or too close to heat sources, otherwise they will be deformed by heat and cause a decrease in accuracy.
When measuring parts on a machine tool, do not measure when the parts are moving, and be sure to wait until the parts are completely stopped before measuring. Otherwise, not only will the accuracy of the measurement not be guaranteed, but the measuring surface of the measuring tool will lose accuracy due to premature wear, and may even cause safety accidents. Precision measuring tools, as measuring tools, must never be used as substitutes for other tools. For work such as marking, knocking and prying parts, cleaning debris or waste liquid, special tools must be used, and precision measuring tools at hand cannot be used for convenience. In addition, waving or turning precision measuring tools in your hands at will are also incorrect operating behaviors, which can easily damage the accuracy of the measuring tools.
02
The correct repair and maintenance method of precision measuring tools. During use, if any abnormal phenomenon is found in the precision measuring tools, such as uneven surface, burrs, rust spots, etc., as well as inaccurate scale, bending and deformation of the ruler, inflexible movement, etc., at this time, the user must not disassemble and repair it by himself, and it is not allowed to use rough methods such as hammers, files, sandpaper, etc. to solve the problem. Doing so will not only fail to repair the fault of the measuring tool, but will further increase the error of the measuring tool.
If the above situation is found, the correct way to deal with it is to immediately take the initiative to send it to the measurement station for inspection. After inspection and verification of the accuracy of the measuring tool, continue to use it.
During use, remember not to stack precision measuring tools with other tools such as knives, hammers, files, etc. to avoid damage. Do not place precision measuring tools on machine tools, because the machine tools will generate large vibrations when working, and this vibration may cause the measuring tools to fall and be damaged. Whether in normal storage or in the interval between use, precision measuring tools should be placed flat in a dedicated box to avoid damage. In addition, if it is close to a magnetic field, the precision measuring tool will be magnetized and cause inconvenience in measurement. Therefore, when storing, be sure to keep the precision measuring tool away from the magnetic field, such as the magnetic workbench of the grinder.
After use, the measuring tool should be wiped clean in time. In addition to stainless steel or protective coating measuring tools, the surface of general metal measuring tools should be coated with a layer of anti-rust oil and placed in a special box and stored in a dry place to avoid rust. Even if it has not been used for a long time, the precision measuring tool should be regularly calibrated and maintained. For precision measuring tools that have been used for a long time, they should be sent to the measurement station for maintenance and accuracy calibration regularly, so as to effectively maintain the accuracy of the measuring tool to the required standard.
