Engine cooling and lubrication systems

The internal temperature of the engine is very high when it is working, so how does it cool and lubricate itself? Today, the editor will take you to understand the cooling system and lubrication system of the engine!

To ensure the normal operation of the automobile engine, the lubrication system and the cooling system must be indispensable. You must know that the temperature of the gas in the cylinder can be as high as 2500K. Parts in contact with high-temperature gas will reduce the strength of the parts due to high temperature, shorten the life of the parts, and may also damage the normal fit clearance and so on.
So in our daily car maintenance, we need to replace the engine oil and filter regularly, so do you know how the engine oil, water tank, etc. lubricate and cool the engine?

How is the engine lubricated?

As the "blood" of the engine, the engine oil has the functions of lubricating, cooling, cleaning, sealing and rust prevention for the engine oil. Regularly changing the engine oil plays an important role in the engine.

The oil is mainly stored in the oil pan. When the engine is running, the oil pump is driven to send the oil to various parts of the engine by the pressure of the pump. The lubricated engine oil will return to the oil pan along the cylinder wall and other channels, and be recycled repeatedly.

The oil that is lubricated repeatedly will contain impurities such as worn metal dust or dust, which will accelerate the wear between parts if not cleaned.
Therefore, an oil filter must be installed on the oil passage for filtration. However, if the time is too long, the engine oil will also become dirty, so the engine oil filter must be replaced after the vehicle has driven a certain mileage.

How is the engine cooled?

There are two ways of engine cooling, water cooling and air cooling, and now general vehicle engines use water cooling. The engine water-cooled cooling system is mainly composed of water pump, radiator, cooling fan, compensation water tank, thermostat, engine block, cylinder head water jacket and other parts.

Mainly through the water pump to speed up the flow of the coolant surrounding the water jacket of the cylinder, through the natural wind and electric fan during driving, the coolant is cooled in the radiator, and the cooled coolant is introduced into the water jacket again, and the cycle is repeated to realize the cooling of the engine.

In addition to cooling the engine, the cooling system also has the function of "insulation".
"Too cold" or "overheated" will affect the normal operation of the engine. This process is mainly through the thermostat to realize the switching of the "big and small cycles" of the engine cooling system.

The large and small circulation can be simply understood as: the coolant in the small circulation does not pass through the radiator, while the coolant in the large circulation passes through the radiator.
