What is mold polishing (mold saving)?

Mold polishing has two purposes; one is to increase the smoothness of the mold so that the surface of the product produced by the mold is smooth, beautiful and beautiful; the other is to make the mold easy to demould so that the plastic will not be stuck to the mold and cannot be removed. Mold polishing is generally a process of using oilstone, sandpaper, polishing paste, etc. to polish the surface of the mold cavity so that the working surface of the mold can be as bright as a mirror, which is called mold polishing.

Do not use the finest oilstone, sandpaper, or abrasive polishing paste from the beginning when polishing the mold, as this will not remove the rough texture. The living surface polished in this way looks very bright, but when viewed from the side, the rough lines appear. Therefore, start with coarse whetstone, sandpaper or abrasive polishing paste, then change to finer whetstone, sandpaper or abrasive polishing paste, and finally polish with the finest abrasive polishing paste. This seems to be more troublesome and requires more steps. In fact, it is not slow. One process after another, the rough processing lines in the front are polished off, and then the following processes are carried out without rework. The smoothness of the mold can be achieved in one step. picture

Mold polishing generally uses a coarse oil stone to roughly polish the surface of the machined mold cavity to remove the knife marks of the machine tools, and then uses a fine oil stone to polish to remove the traces of the coarse oil stone, and then uses fine sandpaper to polish the surface. The surface polished with fine oilstone is then polished, and finally polishing paste or abrasive paste is used to perform final fine polishing on the surface of the mold cavity to achieve a bright mirror-like effect. This is the general process of polishing molds. Of course, if possible, you can use an ultrasonic polisher to polish the mold, which is more efficient. People also save effort

Mold polishing and mold saving work instructions

1. Basics of polishing

1. Appearance polishing

a. The shape remains unchanged (first make the base surface roughly and evenly)

b. There should be no scars (clean if there are any debris mixed into the cut)

2. Slope polishing

Polish in the direction of separation (to prevent undercutting)

2. Polishing conditions

1. Do not polish only in the same direction;

2. Start from places that are not easy to polish (corners, grooves, etc.);

3. There must be no back ditch;

4. Wash thoroughly when changing the polishing steps.

3. Precautions during polishing process

1. The correctness of the technique

The basic polishing techniques are divided into one-way, curling, and cross. The most important technique in processing the mold core is that the tool should be flattened on the forming surface of the mold core for processing. There should be no chamfers, grooves or edges during the operation.

2. Tool selectivity

According to the shape and surface processing status of the mold core, select the required type of polishing tool. If the tool selection is unreasonable, it will directly affect the polishing effect.

3. Location

When processing the mold core, you should clearly see the forming position of the product before processing, to avoid throwing flowers into the broken surface, causing burrs and other undesirable phenomena in the mold core.

4. The shape remains unchanged

Before polishing, the cavity of the mold core has been processed in place, and the purpose of polishing is to process the mold core to certain requirements according to its shape. During polishing, the shape of the workpiece must be confirmed clearly before processing. If the mold core is deformed during processing, it is likely to cause the mold core to be scrapped.
