What is sandblasting? What does sandblasting do?

The role of sandblasting is to make the surface of the workpiece obtain a certain degree of cleanliness and different roughness, so that the mechanical properties of the workpiece surface are improved, the fatigue resistance of the workpiece is improved, the adhesion between it and the coating is increased, the durability of the coating is extended, and it is also beneficial to the leveling and decoration of the coating. The process of sandblasting can remove rust, and there is no need to grind and remove rust before sandblasting.

Sandblasting is a method of material surface treatment

The purpose of sandblasting is:

1. Remove pollutants (such as rust) on the surface of the material, by-products in the material processing process (such as scale on the surface of the steel plate during the steel plate rolling process, casting sand for making molds adhered to the surface of the casting), etc.

2. Increase the roughness of the surface, increase the contact area between the coating and the material, and improve adhesion.

3. Decoration, such as the injection mold after surface sandblasting, the processed plastic surface has a certain degree of roughness, flat, non-slip. There are also patterns sprayed on the glass with sand. Sandblasting and grinding are both surface treatment methods specified by ISO standards. Grinding can grind the edge of the coating into a slope during the surface treatment process, but the roughness of the metal surface after grinding is very small;

Sandblasting can spray out surface roughness. From the construction point of view, sandblasting first and then grinding, or grinding first and then sandblasting, both methods are possible, and the specific considerations should be based on many factors such as contract requirements, construction progress and labor.

For example, the hull of the ship repair contract is sandblasting, which is generally sprayed first and then ground; for ballast water tanks, it can be ground first and then sprayed. Sandblasting is only for the exposed steel plate to improve the cleanliness and roughness, which can greatly reduce the workload of sandblasting.

At present, sandblasting has been widely used in various fields. Sandblasting is a process of cleaning and roughening the surface of the substrate by the impact of high-speed sand flow. Traditional abrasives such as quartz sand, river sand, copper ore sand, etc. will produce a lot of dust due to insufficient hardness. They may also contain free silicon and harmful heavy metals, which may cause pneumoconiosis/silicosis. Due to various environmental regulations that restrict the application of other abrasives, many industrial countries are looking for safe and environmentally friendly dust-free sandblasting abrasives in order to protect human health and the environment.
