Which type of 4 flute end mill is used for processing superalloys?

Many people don’t know about superalloys and what they are made of. Common superalloys mainly refer to iron-based superalloys, nickel-based superalloys and cobalt-based superalloys. So which 4 flute end mill is used for processing high temperature alloys? What are the characteristics of processing high temperature alloy 4 flute end mills? See the following for details.

1. Cutting characteristics of processing high-temperature alloys

Like other processed parts, the processing of high-temperature alloy 4 flute end mill also has the following characteristics;

1. Great cutting force

If you take 45 steel as a reference, then the cutting force used to process high-temperature alloys is two or three times that.

2. Severe work hardening

The processing of high-temperature alloys is similar to stainless steel and other materials, and the hardness of the cutting surface and the processed surface layer is more than twice the collective hardness.

3. High cutting temperature

Generally, the cutting temperature of difficult-to-machine materials is very high, and the high-temperature alloy has a high cutting temperature due to the large cutting force and poor heat conduction.

4. Milling cutter and severe wear

Because of its high cutting force, severe work hardening, and high cutting temperature, the tool wear is severe. It is easy to cause tool abrasive wear, bonding wear and tool boundary and groove wear.

2. Material selection for processing high-temperature alloy milling cutters

Cemented carbide tools are usually used for processing high-temperature alloys, and cemented carbide rods with fine particles and ultra-fine particles are preferentially used. Commonly used are YW4, YS2, YD15, YS8, YG813, YG643, etc. In addition to using cemented carbide, ceramic and pcnb tools can also be used to mill high-temperature alloys.

General brands have high-hardness series 4 flute end mills to mill high-temperature alloys, such as the 6P series of DaElement brand and the HX series of Fraisa in Switzerland. If the customer can provide the grade of the workpiece to be processed, or roughly the hardness, as well as the current machine tool, processing technology, etc., the CNC tool supplier can match a better product.
