The 8 Most Commonly Used Non-metallic Materials, Most Engineers Have Never Used

1. POM

POM is commonly known as Saigang. The reason why it is called Saigang is mainly because of its high hardness, with a Rockwell hardness of D80-85Z. POM is the most commonly used material in non-standard machinery. The surface of this material is relatively lubricated and wear-resistant. It can be used continuously at a temperature of -40° to 100°C. Used for lightweight parts such as shafts or gears.

The English abbreviation (PTFE) is also known as the king of plastics, Teflon, Teflon is a polymer material. It is very resistant to high and low temperatures, and can reach -180°C to 260°C. The friction coefficient is extremely low, and the friction with steel materials can reach 0.04, which is close to rolling friction. It is also one of the most corrosion-resistant materials in the world. Can resist any organic solvents.

The material is relatively soft, difficult to process, easy to deform, and cannot process high-precision parts. Generally used in mechanical design for wear-resistant parts, such as chain guides, w-shaped seals, etc.

Nylon is one of the most commonly used materials in non-standard machinery. The material is wear-resistant and self-lubricating, and can be lubricated at high temperature to make its friction coefficient extremely low. The material has high geometric accuracy and can process gear bearings and other parts. The high temperature resistance can reach 160°C, and it can be used continuously, but it is easy to absorb water and expand when soaked in water, which will affect the accuracy.

The name polyethylene, the material is cheap and widely used, and it is also one of the commonly used materials for non-standard machinery. PVC has anti-static and non-anti-static materials. In electronic products, the belt used is anti-static. There is also a difference between PVC hard material and soft material. Generally, the material that bears the load is basically hard material, such as tooling boards. The melting point of this material is 75-90°. This product cannot be used when it is in contact with food, because high temperature will release carcinogens.

It is called PU, also known as PU, which has good oil resistance, toughness, wear resistance, aging resistance and adhesion; it has the rigidity of plastic and the elasticity of rubber. Industrial special (PU); wheels, shovel wheels, skateboard wheels, smoke machine wheels, bearing wheels, driving wheels, etc.; sound-absorbing layer, seals, buffer heads, buffers, anti-scratch parts, anti-scratch parts, fixture pads , Lightweight cushion generally adopts polyurethane.

ABS plastic is a resin made of three monomers, A (acrylonitrile) B (butadiene) S (styrene) and their different contents can be made into various resins. Among the machinery, it is suitable for general parts, wear-reducing and wear-resistant parts, and transmission parts. ABS is also one of the main materials for 3D printing, and it is also the most stable material in 3D printing.

Refers to the highly elastic polymer material with reversible deformation. The rubber that increases the friction coefficient on the surface of the roller in the machine is the lagging rubber, which has high wear resistance and good sealing performance. The oil seal and O-ring are all made of rubber. But the rubber will age, generally cracked and hardened.

The chemical name is phenolic plastic, which has high mechanical strength and good wear resistance. There are anti-static and non-anti-static options in the selection. It can be used for tooling boards, fixture backing plates, and lightweight materials, but its mechanical properties are relatively low. Poor, the precision after processing is not high. Therefore, it cannot be used in machinery where the load is large and the precision is high.
