Learn the correct use, repair, and maintenance methods for precision measuring tools – be sure to save this!

In industrial production, precision measuring tools such as vernier calipers and micrometers are indispensable in various production and processing processes to ensure the dimensional accuracy of equipment parts and machined workpieces. Due to their precision, it is crucial to follow standardized and reasonable operating procedures when using them. Furthermore, the maintenance and repair of precision measuring tools also require high standards. Improper measures can compromise the accuracy and reliability of the measuring tools; users must master the correct methods.

01. Proper Use of Precision Measuring Tools: Not all equipment can be measured with precision measuring tools. For example, forged or cast blanks, or parts containing abrasives such as diamond, should never be measured with precision measuring tools. Doing so can easily cause wear on the measuring surface of the tool, affecting its accuracy.

Before measurement, check that the measuring surface of the precision measuring tool and the surface of the part being measured are clean. The presence of foreign objects will affect the measurement accuracy, so always wipe away any foreign objects before measurement.

Due to thermal expansion and contraction, temperature is a significant factor affecting measurement results. To ensure accuracy during measurements, the temperature of the part and the measuring instrument must be kept consistent. Ideally, measurements should be taken at normal room temperature, around 20 degrees Celsius. When storing precision measuring instruments, avoid direct sunlight or placing them too close to heat sources, as this can cause deformation due to heat and reduce accuracy.

When measuring parts on a machine tool, do not measure while the part is moving; wait until it has completely stopped. Otherwise, not only will the measurement accuracy be compromised, but the measuring surfaces of the instrument may also wear out prematurely, potentially leading to a safety hazard.

Precision measuring instruments are measuring tools and should never be used as substitutes for other tools. For tasks such as scribing, hammering, prying parts, or cleaning debris or waste liquid, specialized tools must be used. Do not use readily available precision measuring instruments for convenience. Furthermore, carelessly holding and swinging or rotating precision measuring instruments is incorrect and can easily damage their accuracy.

02. Proper Repair and Maintenance of Precision Measuring Instruments: If any abnormalities are found in the precision measuring instrument during use, such as unevenness, burrs, rust spots, inaccurate graduations, bent or deformed scales, or stiff movement, the user must not attempt to disassemble or repair it themselves. Furthermore, it is strictly forbidden to use rough methods such as hammers, files, or sandpaper to solve the problem. Doing so will not only fail to fix the instrument's malfunction but will also further increase its error. If the above situations are found, the correct procedure is to immediately send it to a metrology station for inspection. After inspection and verification that the instrument's accuracy is correct, it can be used again. During use, remember not to pile precision measuring instruments with other tools such as knives, hammers, and files to avoid damage. Also, do not place precision measuring instruments on machine tools, as the significant vibrations generated during machine operation may cause the measuring instruments to fall and be damaged. Whether during normal storage or during breaks in use, precision measuring instruments should be placed flat in a dedicated box to prevent damage. Furthermore, proximity to magnetic fields can magnetize precision measuring instruments, causing measurement difficulties. Therefore, when storing precision measuring instruments, it is essential to keep them away from magnetic fields, such as the magnetic worktable of a grinding machine.

After use, the measuring instruments should be wiped clean promptly. Except for stainless steel instruments or those with protective coatings, most metal measuring instruments should be coated with anti-rust oil and placed in a dedicated box in a dry place to prevent rusting.

Even if not used for extended periods, precision measuring instruments should undergo regular calibration and maintenance. For precision measuring instruments used long-term, they should be periodically sent to a metrology station for maintenance and accuracy verification to effectively maintain their accuracy to the required standards.
